Runes

There are a lot of misconceptions about Runes floating around. Many folk view them as an alternate form of Tarot. Nothing could be further from the truth. The runes have been around a lot longer than the Tarot. Runes used in divination were described by the Roman historian Tacitus. Vinca writing, a kind of proto-rune system dates back to 5,000 to 6,000 B.C.E.

Regarding "misconceptions about the runes", you may enjoy this.

Several years ago I attended a first-ever college Pagan pride in my area at the invitation of its coordinator.

One of the lectures was on the Tarot. Since I was there representing Heathenry - as both a guest and lecturer - I tried to attend every lecture.

During the Tarot class the instructor began by saying (in brief), 'the tarot was easy for her to read because it was people', she then demonstrated this by showing a tarot card with a person on it. Then, she pulled out a rune and said, 'I cant read this. I dont read stick-people'.

Well, needless to say I jumped out of my chair like a woman on fire. I then explained to all gathered that the runes where NOT 'stick people', and then begin a mini lecture on the runes for good measure.

I sat through her entire class with an eagle's ear and a hawk's eye. She said later my presence made her 'very uncomfortable'.

Well, thats what happens when you frakk with us 'stick people'.
